Active and weakening MJO events in the Maritime Continent

چکیده

Abstract To better understand the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) in Maritime Continent (MC), events from 1980 to 2019 were classified as active or weakening according propagation characteristics and amplitude changes two leading indices, Real-time Multivariate MJO (RMM) index Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) Index (OMI). Active had larger amplitudes than events, those differences appeared at day − 3 RMM 8 OMI remained through + 15 both indices (day 0 marked an event entered MC). Thus, stronger they approached crossed MC. environments between these composites of OLR specific humidity compared for each. consistently more negative anomalies greater boundary layer free troposphere events. Those persisted during easterly westerly phases Quasi-biennial (QBO) La Niña El Niño. QBO winds did winds. Finally, featured a diurnal cycle lower-tropospheric over land areas MC, amount atmospheric moisture available was ones. These results indicate that amplitude, OLR, tropospheric can all be important tools identifying including different Niño-Southern (ENSO).

A Stratospheric "Drain over the Maritime Continent

Operational wind data are used to show that the time-averaged mass flux near the tropopause is downward over the maritime continent (Indonesia) region during both summer and winter. The air descends within a layer above the convective level of neutral buoyancy (despite mean upward motion below and above this layer) and must rise through the mean tropopause elsewhere, contradicting the common vi...

Magnetotelluric Studies of Active Continent–Continent Collisions

Continent–continent collisions are an important tectonic process and have played a fundamental role in the evolution of the modern continents. A combination of geological and geophysical data has provided new constraints on the structure and temporal evolution of these orogens. Magnetotelluric (MT) studies have been an important part of these studies since they can constrain the fluid content a...

Symmetric and antisymmetric signals in MJO deep convection . 1 Part II : Kinematics and thermodynamics

5 This paper studies the significance of MJO convection asymmetry through composites 6 of kinematic and thermodynamic fields associated with predominantly symmetric and pre7 dominantly antisymmetric MJO convection using ECMWF Interim Reanalysis. The MJO 8 events were identified based on the primary MJO modes extracted from the IR brightness 9 temperature in Part I of this work. The predominantl...

The Cross-Equatorial Northerly Surge over the Maritime Continent and Its Relationship to Precipitation Patterns

This study describes the characteristics of the cross-equatorial northerly surge (CENS), a northerly flow that appears intermittently over the equatorial region between October and April, and its relationship to the precipitation patterns over the Maritime Continent. The CENS in this study was defined as the area-averaged northerly wind exceeding 5 m s 1 over 105 E–115 E, 5 S–EQ based on the Qu...
